¡Hola!

Perdón la falta de información durante las últimas semanas, no es que no estamos trabajando si no que estamos trabajando tanto que no encontramos tiempo para escribir!

Sorry for the lack of posts over the last few weeks. I am so busy that I have not found time to write!

Estamos en la etapa de abrir los campamentos tortugueros para la temporada alta de anidación de tortugas golfinas. Esperemos una temporada de anidación exitosa y mandamos saludos a todos los campamentos tortugueros del Pacifico oriental quienes andan trabajando para el sobrevivencia de estas seres increíbles.

Aquí en el norte de Jalisco y Nayarit, México todo va bien. Ya llegaron las primeras hembras golfinas y los viveros de incubación comienzan a llenar. Ahora con la llegada de las lluvias todo va a poner aun mejor.

We (Red Tortuguera) are opening the sea turtle protection camps for the main Olive Ridley turtle nesting season. We hope that this will be a very successful nesting season and we would like to send good wishes for a successful season to all the other sea turtle conservation projects in the East Pacific working for the survival of these incredible animals. Here in the north of Jalisco and Nayarit, Mexico we are off to a good start. The first female Olive Ridleys are arriving to nest and our hatcheries are beginning to fill up. Now that the rainy season has arrived thing will only get busier!

Como novedad en el nuevo proyecto de conservación “Careyeros” en Punta de Mita las primeras crías eclosionaron hace un par de semanas… y en vez de golfina fueron tortuguitas negras.

On a different note: at the new sea turtle protection project "Careyeros" on Punta de Mita the first turtles hatched a few weeks ago.....and instead of Olive Ridley they were Black sea turtles!

¿Y como va Jaltemba la tortuga carey juvenil? EXCELENTE, esta semana fui a Guasave, Sinaloa y me sorprendí con su progreso. Ya recupero la agilidad en el agua y come muchísimo. Sabe pelar Jaiba (cangrejos) y encanta comer calamar. Esta subiendo de peso pero todavía falta unos kilos. Estamos pensando que va a estar lista para regresar a la Bahía de Jaltemba, Nayarit en medianos de julio.

How is Jaltemba the juvenile turtle doing? Extremely well! This week I went to Guasave, Sinaloa and I was surprised at the progress she has made in such a short time. She is now very agile in the water and eats allot. She knows how to open the crabs she is fed and loves calamari. She has gained weight but still needs to gain a few more kilos before she is released in the Bay of Jaltemba in mid July.

¡Jaltemba ayuda con la educación ambiental!

Durante su estancia en el CIIDIR-IPN en Guasave (http://www.vidasilvestreciidir.com), Sinaloa; la tortuga Jaltemba está ayudando con el educación ambiental.

During her stay at the CIIDIR-IPN in Guasave, Sinaloa; the hawksbill Jaltemba is helping with the environmental educational of local school children to the problems sea turtles (and other species) face in our oceans.

El equipo de Vida Silvestre CIIDIR, tienen visitas de escuelas locales, durante las cuales enseñan sobre la importancia de cuidar el medio ambiente y en especial las tortugas marinas. Hoy Jaltemba fue un ejemplo a los muchachos de cómo las tortugas marinas son accidentalmente (y muchas veces intencionalmente) capturadas. También hablaron sobre los peligros de comer tortugas marinas y la ley mexicano que prohíbe el consumo o la posesión de estas especies en peligro de extinción.

The Wildlife department’s teams from the centre for investigation CIIDIR, receive visits from children studying at local schools. During these visits the children are taught of the importance of looking after the environment with a focus on sea turtle conservation. Today Jaltemba was an example of how sea turtle are accidentally caught (and sometimes intentionally caught) on fishing lines and nets.

Comenzó la recuperación de Jaltemba

Ya pasaron dos días desde la cirugía para quitar el anzuelo de la garganta de la tortuga carey Jaltemba y parece que está recuperando bien. Ayer no pudimos alimentarla con el tubo porque su garganta estaba hinchada por la cirugía. Está recibiendo antibióticos y hoy estaba más activo buceando bien en el taque lo cual señala que va a recuperar bien.

Its 2 days since the surgery to remove the fishing hook from Jaltemba the hawksbills throat and she seems to be recovering well. Yesterday we could not tube feed her because her throat was swollen. However she is receiving antibiotics and today she was a little more active in her tank which is a good sign.

Operación exitosa

Ayer fue operada con exito la tortuga Jaltemba!.

Se empleo un endoscopio y diferentes instrumentos para ubicar la punta del anzuelo y dirigirlo a una zona segura para hacer una incisión de menos de 5 mm por donde se extrajo la punta para poder ser cortada y liberar el anzuelo de forma segura, se ha iniciado el tratamiento para la recuperación de "Jaltemba" para su liberación una vez que su condición de salud haya mejorado.

Mi más sincero reconocimiento al MVZ Jesús Pineda, MVZ Roy Quintero, Irvin González, M en C Alan Zavala, Dr. Alonso Aguirre y a todo el equipo de Vida Silvestre y a todos los que han apoyado de alguna manera para la recuperación de esta tortuga en peligro critico de extinción. ¡Gracias a todos! Yesterday we successfully operated on Jaltemba!


An endoscope and other instruments were used to locate the exact position of the hook which was then moved to an area of the throat where we could safely make a 5 mm incision through which we extracted the point of the hook. This was then cut allowing us to safely remove the rest of the hook from her throat. Work has now begun to rehabilitate Jaltemba so that she is in top conditions for her release in July.

Ultrasonido

¡Buenas noches!

Hoy (14/05/2012) llevamos a Jaltemba para tener un ultrasonido para ver si hay posibilidad de sacar el anzuelo por la garganta.

Today (14/05/2012) we took Jaltemba for an ultrasound in the hope that it would aid in our efforts to remove the fishing hook from her throat.

El problema sigue siendo el tamaño del anzuelo comparado con la garganta de la tortuga. Hay importantes venas en la garganta que no podemos arriesgarnos a cortar en el intento de sacar el anzuelo.

The problem is the size of the hook compared with that of the turtles throat. There are important veins in the throat that we cannot risk cutting while extracting the hook.

Mañana viene un veterinario del zoológico de Culiacán para ayudarnos, entre todos esperamos tener éxito para salvar esta pequeña carey.

Tomorrow a vet is coming to help us from the Zoo in Culiacan. Working together we hope to remove the hook.

Es muy frustrante no poder ayudarla más rápido, pero mejor un trabajo bien hecho aquí no podemos equivocarnos.

Its frustrating not being able to quickly remove the hook, but its better that we take our time and do a good job, than rush and make a mistake.

Alimentando a la carey Jaltemba:

Por el momento Jaltemba no puede comer por sí mismo sin el peligro de causar complicaciones por tener el anzuelo en su garganta, así que tiene que ser alimentado por media de un tubo. Esta siendo alimentado con un liquado de mariscos con vitaminas. Aun que es un proceso estresante para ella, cada día esta mas fuerte gracias a este alimentación.

Right now Jaltemba cannot feed herself due to the danger of the food getting caught in her throat on the hook. So as not to risk complications, we are feeding her using a tube. She is being given a "sea food smoothie" with added vitamins. This is not a stress free process for Jaltemba, but each day she gains strength through this process.

On the 5th of May the hawksbill turtle Jaltemba was transported to the CIIDIR-IPN (http://www.vidasilvestreciidir.com/vidasilvestre/Antecedentes.html) for treatment.

El sábado 6 de mayo pasamos 4 horas intentando quitar el anzuelo de la garganta de la carey pero sin éxito.

On Saturday 6th of May we spent 4 hours trying to remove the fishing hook from Jaltembas throat....without success.

El problema es que el anzuelo (ver radiografías) es muy grande para sacar sin que se engancha de nuevo en los tejidos de la garganta.

The problem we are having is that the hook (see x rays) is too big to easily remove without it becoming newly hooked in the turtles throat.

La única opción ahora es una cirugía. Esta planeada para el 11 de mayo.

The only option is surgery. This is planned for the 11th of May.

Una semana de espera

Para salvar la tortuga carey “Jaltemba” fue necesaria pedir la ayuda de SEMARNAT y PROFEPA para dar los permisos para moverla a Guasave, Sinaloa para rehabilitación en el CIIDIR-IPN. Trabajando juntos todos los permisos fueron conseguidos y el día 5 de mayo trasladamos “Jaltemba” la carey a Guasave.

To save the hawksbill turtle "Jaltemba" we needed the help of SEMARNAT (Mexican Government wildlife department) and PROFEPA (Mexican wildlife police). They quickly wrote us the permits we needed to transport Jaltemba to Guasave, Sinaloa where the group sea turtle research group CIIDIR-IPN (and sea turtle hospital) is located. In just 5 days we had the permits and Jaltemba was taken to Guasave on the 5th of May.

Rescate de Tortuga carey juvenil “Jaltemba”

El día 30 de abril 2012 buzos de la Bahía de Jaltemba, Nayarit entregaron a miembros de la Red Tortuguera A.C. una juvenil de tortuga carey lo cual fue encontrada pegada a un cimbra en la Isla Jaltemba (también conocido como Isla Coral) de esta bahía. Aun liberada de la siembre el anzuelo quedo atorado en la garganta del animal poniendo su vida en peligro.

On the 30th of April 2012 divers in the Jaltemba Bay, Nayarit brought a juvenile hawksbill turtle to members of the Red Tortuguera A.C. This critically endangered turtle had been found caught on a longline by the Jaltemba island (aka coral island) in the bay. Although they cut the fishing line the hook remains deep in the turtles throat. If it is not removed the turtle will die.

Quienes somos

En enero 2011 un grupo de tortugueros de Nayarit y Jalisco decidieron unir esfuerzos para proteger las tortugas marinas y apoyar mutuamente los trabajos de cada uno de los campamentos trayendo diferentes especialidades al grupo. Los campamentos tortugueros fundadores de la Red Tortuguera A.C. (RETO) son El Naranjo (Nayarit), Boca de Chila (Nayarit), Mayto (Jalisco) y la Sociedad Ecológica de Occidente (Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco). En el 2012 se une el Campamento Careyeros (Punta de Mita, Nayarit) a RETO.
